Prof. Vadim Utkin of the Ohio State University first visits the institute as a guest scientist to return regularly almost every summer semester.
2005:
Retirement of the academical director Dr.-Ing. F. Freyberger and appointment of Dr.-Ing. D. Wollherr as his successor.
The "Excellence Initiative" is launched by the German Federal Government and the German States in 2005.
2006:
Appointment of Dr.-Ing. O.Stursberg, Universität Dortmund, as associate professor for Industrial Automation.
The Excellence Cluster "Cognition for Technical Systems" (CoTeSys) is established and granted funding by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). Prof. Martin Buss is appointed coordinator. http://www.cotesys.org/
2007:
Retirement of Irene Lukowski, the institute’s secretary fort en year. She is succeeded by Larissa Schmid.
2008:
Dr.-Ing. Sandra Hirche is appointed W2 professor and takes the post as Head of Associate Institute for Information-oriented Control as CoTeSys Professor (Excellence cluster Cognition for Technical Systems).
June: Inauguration of the CoTeSys Central Robot Laboratory on June 16, 2008.
August: The institute is one of the masterminds of the IEEE RO-MAN 2008 conference in Munich.
08/09: Renowned MIT professors Anuradha Annaswamy and Mandayam Srinivasan spend their sabbatical at the institute.
2009:
Prof. Stursberg leaves the institute to take the post of professor at the University of Kassel.
Dr.-Ing. Kolja Kühnlenz is awarded the Carl von Linde Junior Fellowship.
Dongheui Lee, Jörg Conradt and Luca Scardovi are appointed Assistant Professors at LSR. Prof. Lee's area of expertise is "Dynamische Mensch-Roboter-Interaktion für Automatisierungstechnik", Prof. Conradt takes over the department "Neurowissenschaftliche Systemtheorie", and Prof. Scardovi's main research interest is "Multi-Roboter-Regelung".
2010:
Prof. Gordon Cheng, CoTeSys Professor since 2008, is appointed Professor and Chair of the Institute for Cognitive Systems.
The second CoTeSys lab is established in Karlstrasse 45.
Dr.-Ing. Dirk Wollherr is awarded the Carl von Linde Junior Fellowship.
After twelve years of research in the field of high-fidelity telepresence and teleaction, the Sonderforschungsbereich (SFB) 453 comes to an end and reviews its outstanding results.
Retirement of Josef Gradl and Horst Kubick (workshop). They are succeeded by Domenik Weilbach and Robert Geng.
10/11: Prof. Yasuharu Kunii from Chuo University, Japan, spends his sabbatical at the LSR.
2011:
The European Research Council awards Prof. Martin Buss, the head of LSR, with the highly prestigious ERC Advanced Grant Award for internationally renowned Scientists.
Prof. Buss is decorated with the "Verdienstkreuz am Bande", i.e. the Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
Prof. Dongheui Lee, assistant professor, and Angelika Peer, postdoc at the Institute of Automatic Control Engineering (LSR), are awarded the Carl von Linde Junior Fellowship at the Institute for Advanced Study at Technische Universität München (TUM-IAS).
