The European Research Council awarded Prof. Martin Buss, head of LSR, with the highly prestigious ERC Advanced Grant Award for internationally renowned Scientists. The grant funds 5 years of research for the project SHRINE (Seamless Human-Robot-Interaction in Dynamically Changing Environments) to highlight and further promote the outstanding achievements by the LSR team in the field of advanced Human-Robot-Interaction.

At the 2009 IEEE International Conference on Mechatronics and Automation (ICMA 2009) in Changchun, Jilin, China, Markus Achtelik, Dipl.-Ing. Tianguang Zhang, Dr.-Ing. Kolja Kühnlenz and Prof. Martin Buss received the Toshio Fukuda Best Award in Mechatronics for their paper "Visual Tracking and Control of a Quadcopter Using a Stereo Camera System and Inertial Sensors".
This year's Best Poster Award at the 6th International Conference on Machine Learning and Data Mining MLDM 2009 went to Dipl.-Ing. Michelle Karg, Robert Jenke, Dr.-Ing. Kolja Kühnlenz and Prof. Martin Buss for their paper "A Two-fold PCA-Approach for the Inter-Individual Recognition of Emotions in Natural Walking".
The authors Sven Kraus, Matthias Althoff, Bernd Heißing and Martin Buss won the best poster award at the 2009 IEEE Intelligent Vehicles Symposium for their paper Cognition and Emotion in Autonomous Cars. The work was a collaboration with the institute of vehicle technology (Lehrstuhl für Fahrzeugtechnik, FTM).

For the paper "Produktionssteuerung auf der Grundlage von Echtzeitautomaten", Prof. Stursberg received the best paper award 2008 of the journal "at-Automatisierungstechnik" (in the category 'Methods'). The paper, which is joint work with Dr. Sebastian Panek and Prof. Sebastian Engell, reports on an approach to optimally compute control schedules for production processes. For the Master thesis entitled 'Entwicklung eines VR-Versuchsstands zur Simulation von Fahrzeugtüren', M. Sc. Claudia Ehinger was honored by the Volkswagen AG. She received the "Woman Driving Award 2008" associated with 5.000 Euros. The research work, which was carried out in cooperation with BMW AG (Dipl.-Ing. F. Soldner) and supervised by Dipl.-Ing. M. Strolz and Prof. M. Buss, resulted in a novel VR test bed for the simulation of both conventional and actuated car doors. Claudia is now a scientific employee at the TU München, Institute for Machine Tools and Industrial Management (http://www.iwb.tum.de/).
