Haptic Person-to-Person Interaction

In our research, we develop a model for a dancing partner as an integral part of a virtual scenario including haptic feedback. To this end, understanding of human-human interaction is an essential prerequisite. Depending on its form (direct or via an object), one can distinguish different types of interaction. However, whether the humans are directly connected as in dancing or manipulate an object together does play only a minor role: The common ground of interaction scenarios is the negotiation of a common trajectory of the interaction point. In the concrete scenario of dancing, the timing pattern of movements plays a more important factor, whereas in object manipulation position errors are more relevant. Crucial to person to person interaction is the comprehension of dominance of one interaction partner. This dominance will vary in dependence of task and role. Only profound knowledge of interactions allows replacing one of the humans by a virtual partner without loosing the quality in interaction.
