Project "ViGWaM" (Vision Guided Virtual Walking Machine)

Vision guided intelligent humanoid walking refers to the ability of a walking machine to perform a set of tasks in a safe, autonomous and human-like manner in a simple structured environment. For this purpose, a supervisor for a biped walking machine will be developed, together with a sensor system (artificial vision, self localization etc.). This sensor system will be used for control, observation and to adapt walking parameters and patterns. Previous experience obtained from biomechanics research will be used to develop appropiate methods. The research and development of the walking apparatus will be performed in close collaboration with the Lehrstuhl B für Mechanik (Institute for Mechatronics) at the TUM. The primary goal is to introduce international, in particular Japanese, methods of intelligent control for autonomous humanoid robotic to Germany, and thus so promote the development of controlled neuroprotheses.
This work is supported by the German Research Foundation (DFG) within the framework of the Autonomous Walking Priority Research Program SPP 1039.
